Last week, I gathered my favorite sustainable women's sandals and this week I want to provide the same service for men. In addition to sandals, I've also included some closed-toe, slip-on options for a little more formal look. These designs are all neutral in color and fairly simple so they can go with many outfits and last through the years. Also, I changed my mind since last week about buying vintage sandals. I found some pretty beautiful pairs that I would probably risk getting a foot fungus from and I've since learned that you can kill most germs by just wiping the insides with your household cleaner. Yay!
Vintage Sperry Slip-Ons from Apache | Kansas City, Kansas
These vintage Sperry's are so beautiful with their woven leather design and would be great city-exploring shoes for day or night. Buying vintage is one of my favorite things because it preserves history and design as well as preserving the environment. No new resources are used to produce them and you can cut down the amount used in shipping by finding a shop close to you. Apache Vintage in Kansas has a really neat collection of pieces from about the 70s to the 90s that could set you up for some nostalgic summer vacations!
AERO BY DUCKFEET | DENMARK
Danish shoe brand, Duckfeet, adds some class to the typical flip-flop style by using Scandinavian-sourced, durable, leather that is designed to "walk you through decades." As mentioned in my last article, this company strives towards sustainability by making all of their shoes by hand, using natural materials, and making lasting pieces. These would be good for trips to the beach and warm-weather vacations when you're feet need to breathe! They also come in a beautiful, natural tan color if you want a lighter look.
City Slippers by Mohinders | India
Mohinders' city slippers are handmade by a co-op, designed to improve locals' lives, of 170 artisan families in rural India. This is achieved by supporting the cultural practice of shoe-making and paying workers a fair wage to break the cycle of poverty. The main material, leather is locally-sourced in India and is vegetable-tanned which protects the world from harmful chemicals. I like how these feel tropical and festive with the touch of color but are also simple enough to go with most casual outfits.
Arizona in Black by Birkenstock | Germany
The classic "Arizona" sandal by Birkenstock is a statement of heritage, simplicity and adventure. This style has been in production since the 1960s and has been a favorite of nature-loving people since. Almost all materials are natural, locally-sourced, and are renewable sources that do not harm the environment. They are made well to ensure durability and the cork footbeds can be replaced when they wear out so a whole new shoe isn't necessary. The sleek, black-on-black design make this a versatile shoe that can be worn walking around the city or exploring the wilderness.
Checkers Tyre Sandal by Brother Vellies | Kenya, Africa
This is the men's version of the Tyre Sandal that I mentioned in last week's article. The style is still simple and achromatic but the checkers add some fun and surprise to your feet. Brother Vellies is careful to source their materials thoughtfully with minimal impact to the Earth.
MILAN BY OKABASHI | USA
These shoes by Okabashi are pretty innovative in that they are made in the US, very affordable, waterproof, dishwasher safe, and completely recyclable. Not only that but they are guaranteed to last for 2 years and the reviews confirm how comfortable they are, especially for wider feet. The company is very thoughtful in their production process so If you're looking for a vegan summer shoe, this might be the one for you!
Vintage Huaraches from Ramen Zombie | San Francisco, California
I love the classic style and beautiful craftsmanship on these vintage Mexican huaraches sandals. The laced-up leather makes these good for more formal events while the braided edges allow for a little breathability. If these aren't your size, Ramen Zombie has a wide selection of vintage shoes in most sizes!
Cheers to Summer and Sustainable shoe shopping!
