Grooming products have been the hardest for my husband and I to find in an eco-friendly form. The containers for these items are usually plastic, which isn't terrible for the environment if it gets recycled, but the plastic caps are not yet recyclable in Seattle and continue to add waste to the environment. Also, I enjoy the look of classic, glass apothecary jars with their artfully designed labels much more than cheap, plastic tubes and containers. Here I've gathered my favorite pomades that protect the planet from being contaminated with plastic caps and harmful chemicals. All of them come in beautiful, recyclable packaging that would double as decor on your bathroom counter. Most of these are commonly used by gentlemen, but they can also be used by lady folk to shape the tresses!
Classic Pomade | Mail Room Barber | Florence, South Carolina
My husband has been using this pomade for about a week now and has really enjoyed it. Mail Room Barber has created this formula to mimic the pomades of the 40s and 50s that provide a strong, sleek hold. One of the differences between this one and commercial brands is that it washes out much easier with only one try. This company is also committed to producing ethical products by tracking down the sources of all their ingredients and packaging materials, making sure that everyone involved in the production was treated well. The shop also provided wonderful customer service by quickly answering my questions with friendliness and offering further help and hair tips if needed!
Scent featured: "Appalachia" with notes of lavender, bergamot, clove and tobacco
Teddy Boy Original | Anchors Hair Company | Knoxville, Tennessee
This Teddy Boy Pomade by Anchors Hair Company is designed to give you the "greaser" look without the grease. It is water-based and will wash out easily while also providing a decent shine. For every online purchase, these guys send a bar of soap to a family in need and they donate part of their proceeds to other missions around the U.S.
Scent: Bay Rum and Mint
Natural Beeswax Pomade | Alder New York | Brooklyn, New York
Unlike the previously listed pomades, this natural beeswax one by Alder New York is made to provide a lighter hold with a softer sheen. All of the natural and moisturizing ingredients in this product makes it a great option for people with frizzy or curly hair. The combination of coconut and jojoba oils will keep curls soft and structured.
Scent: Only the natural scent of beeswax, no added fragrances
Crystal Lake Water Based | Shear Revival | Asbury Park, New Jersey
Crystal Lake Pomade by Shear Revival is also completely natural with even more moisturizing ingredients like grape seed oil, mango butter and aloe vera. I love the illustrated label on this one that makes it stand out and adds a little artwork to the countertop.
Scent: lemongrass and mahogany
Water Based Pomade | ODouds All Natural | Houston, Texas
Keeping with the idea that natural ingredients are the best for us, O'Douds has made their version using only the best. The simple, black and white packaging is striking and I appreciate the reminder on the front to "please recycle when empty" for added assurance that it won't end up in the trash.
Scent: rosemary and bergamot
I hope you can find one that helps your morning routine and fits with your aesthetic style! Happy hair sculpting!
