There are many all-natural bug repellants out there, but there are very few that come in waste-free containers. Most are liquid and are applied with spray bottles which are not recyclable or compostable in most places. Someday, no matter how many times the bottles get re-used, they will most likely end up in landfills.
Here I've collected the most promising bug repellants for enjoying the outdoors without harming your body or the planet. Since they are not in liquid form, they are also super easy to travel with!
1. Bug Balm | Red Root Herbals | Rice, Washington
I love Red Root Herbals, unique style and philosophy of using only organic ingredients that are either grown in their garden, ethically gathered in the wild, or purchased from thoughtful suppliers. The balm form seems like an easy way to make sure that every spot gets covered and the metal container is completely recyclable. You can purchase a tiny, 1oz tin for shorter adventures or a 2oz tin for longer explorations. This particular product doesn't have any reviews yet, but all of their other products have received wonderful feedback so far!
Scent: Cedarwood & Lemongrass
2. Bug Bar | This and That Herbal | Rochester, Indiana
Similar to the Bug Balm by Red Root, this moisturizing lotion bar by This and That Herbal also comes in a completely recyclable tin. To use it, you take it out of the container and rub it everywhere you want protection. So far, it already has one great review from someone who used it in a very buggy location! There are no labels on this product, making it very simple and cutting down on the amount of resources used for production.
Scent: Tea Tree, Geranium & Citronella
3. Travel Lite Mosquito Repellant Wipes | La Fresh | California, USA
While their wrapper designs are not the best, they also aren't terribly distracting and the great feedback and easy-to-use format make these repellent wipes very attractive. You can take the exact amount of wipes you will need on a trip without having to worry about liquids spilling or not making it through airport security. The wrappers are recyclable and the wipes are biodegradable and compostable. They are also made using clean, renewable, solar energy!
