Last month we had the glorious opportunity to take a break from it all and go to the island of Maui. Our main mission was to celebrate a dear friend's destination wedding and celebrate hard. After the festivities subsided, we made a point to seek out people who are offering simple and sustainable fun and thought we would share our favorites with you.
Maui Brewing Company
We stayed in a condo in the town of Kahana and lucky for us, the Maui Brewing Company happened to be around the corner! The interior design of their pub is beautiful with a simple, industrial vibe.
The company is committed to supporting the local community and taking care of the earth by using recyclable packaging and by giving their used-up grain to nearby farmers as compost material. We particularly enjoyed the lights made out of kegs and the Black Rock Lager.
Fleur de Lei Eco Boutique
On our way to the airport coming home we stopped in the really neat town of Makawao to visit Fleir de Lei Eco Boutique. It's a fairly new store and they don't have a website or a big web presence in general yet so the store was a little hard to track down.
When we got there, though we were warmly greeted by the shop owner, Nancy who explained the sustainable features of all her products and her tendency toward a more modern aesthetic than a lot of eco-conscious people. Her shop features stylish clothes, jewelry, accessories, and bath and body products for men and women. If I lived on the island I would definitely do most of my gift shopping there.
Maui did us some definite good and was a great reminder to make rest and frolicking in the sun and sand a priority once in a while.
